The roof develops

Good progress has been achieved over the past week.  We have also hosted visits from 2 potential Insul Hub clients.

The core team Insul Hub expanded to 3 with Aidan joining Sam and Lewis; the extra pair of hands meant that a lot was achieved in a relatively short space of time.

On Monday morning, the final one m3 of concrete was delivered by Ashville Concrete to complete the last blocks and fill in any voids that had been left from previous pours.

The roof was completed with the addition of 75mm PIR boards plus a substrate of 18mm WBP ply.   This is not the only insulation we will be using; the roof is a hybrid design and will include insulation within the joists too (more on this later) to achieve the desired u value of 0.1.  The roof was then “framed out” around the top ready for more insulation and render boards to be added.

The valley gulley was also formed and set up ready for the installation of the single-ply membrane next week.

On Thursday, Mark and Chris of Phillips Traditional Metal Roofing started on site.  The first job was to apply a membrane to the roof which includes an extra layer designed to hold the steel roof firmly in place as well as to keep it slightly above the substrate thereby allowing any condensation or moisture to run down into the gulley.  While this was being done, a start was made on forming the verges for the gutter.  It was just as well that the roof was covered before the weekend when we were subjected to high winds and heavy rain.  It is as if someone is aware that we are installing a roof …

We are using a Swedish roof, SSAB Greencoat Pural BT imported by Metal Solutions, which uses rapeseed oil in the coating process rather than fossil fuels.  It is very light, only 0.6mm thick, but will last for decades especially as our winters tend not to be as harsh as those in Sweden!  It comes in rolls and is formed on site into roof trays, fascia and verges.

On Thursday, the team from Heroes Scaffolding also called in to create landing platforms at the rear in preparation for window installation at the end of the month.
